Genesis of the Trust

The Crystal Palace Community Development Trust was launched in March 2004. It is a community-based enterprise that operates for the benefit of those
who live and work in the several towns, neighbourhoods and estates that comprise the Crystal Palace area of South London.

It is similar to some 200 or more geographically-focused bodies in the UK that help empower local people and aim to bring about a significant improvement
to their neighbourhood and their quality of life. It is a member of the Development Trusts Association and shares the same characteristics as all other DTA
members:

• Engaged in the economic, social and environmental regeneration of a defined area or community.
• Independent and aiming for self-sufficiency.
• Not for private profit.
• Community-owned with a substantial degree of community management.
• Actively involved in partnerships between the community and the public and private sectors.

The Crystal Palace Community Development Trust was created by a consortium of community and voluntary organisations that had been meeting
together as the Crystal Palace Community Forum since 1997.

The Forum came into existence so as to provide a community input into the Crystal Palace Single Regeneration Budget through consultation, project
development, monitoring and to deliver a small grants programme. It brought community and voluntary sector representatives together, from the five different
local authority areas that were covered by the Crystal Palace SRB scheme, many of whom had had little contact with each other prior to 1997.

Five years on CPCDT has developed a number of different projects including:

• Managing the Anerley Business Centre and Halls – Bromley
• Development of the Kingswood Community Shop – Southwark
• Seeking opportunities to develop community assets in Croydon, Lambeth or Lewisham
• Youth Activities – including art class, youth club, cross borough youth forum, involvement in the Jack Petchey Scheme
• Activities for Older People
• Learning and Employment Support
