Kingswood Community Shop

The Vision of Kingswood Community Shop is ‘to create a community based project that provides local people with access to a range of services which will enhance their social, financial and emotional well being’. The design of the Community Shop will provide a flexible space that works for a wide range of activities and community services. These are expected to include:

• Health checks
• Counselling service
• Advisory service – housing and financial
• Befriending service
• Time bank
• Career outreach provision
• IT training
• Interpreting service
• Transport and recruitment/training of volunteer drivers
• Purchase to order/home delivery service
• Table sales
• Marketing of services including production of a community newsletter

The shop will be housed within two existing shop units within the Kingswood Estate precinct. The shop units are currently unoccupied and have been for a number of years. The proposal is to merge the two shop units and completely refurbish the units to meet the needs specified for the community shop and make the spaces DDA compliant.

CPCDT is delivering this project in partnership with the Kingswood Estate Tenants and Residents Association and Southwark Council through Kingswood House. We have undertaken a major fundraising campaign and as of June 2009 we have raised £325,865, we still have £160,561 to raise and are confident this target will be reached in time for the grand opening of the shops in January 2010.

We have so far received funding for this project through the Big Lottery – Capital Buildings Fund, the Henry Smith Charity, the Mercers Company, the Clothworkers Company and Southwark Council.
